UNION CITY, Calif. — Union City is undertaking a long-range update to its Parks and Recreation Master Plan, a document intended to guide decisions about neighborhood parks, recreation programs and public facilities for the next 15 years.
Why the city is revisiting the plan
In a February 25, 2026 city announcement, officials said the previous master plan was adopted in 1999. Union City’s population and park system have changed substantially since then, prompting a review of future priorities.
The city says residents have raised concerns and ideas involving maintenance, public safety, accessibility, inclusive design and stronger community connections. The new plan is intended to support both improvements to existing spaces and longer-term decisions about recreation opportunities.
What residents have been asked
The official project website describes two rounds of community engagement. The second round included a survey and events at Mark Green Sports Center, Kennedy Youth Center and Old Alvarado Park during March 2026.
The published survey deadline was March 31, 2026. That date has passed; the earlier questionnaire should not be represented as open today unless the city announces a new survey. Community members can still follow later drafts, hearing notices and updates as they are released.
What this does—and does not—mean
A master-plan update is not itself a construction permit or a promise that a specific sports court, pool or park will be built. Individual projects would require separate decisions, funding and schedules.
Residents interested in playground accessibility, maintenance or recreation programming can review the city’s Parks and Recreation Master Plan page and contact local Community and Recreation Services staff for current opportunities to participate.
